April 2025 Car Tax Bands – Petrol and diesel vehicles will be hit with higher car tax fees within weeks as major updates to vehicle excise duty (ved) come into effect. The flat rate cost of car tax from april 2025 is £195. Cars in the bands for co2 emissions of 76 to 90 grams per kilometre and above will pay double the equivalent rates from 2024 to 2025. All cars currently in band a, which emit less than 100g/km of co2, will be moved into band b on 1 april 2025 — a move that will see millions of cars charged ved car tax for the first time.

This guide explains in more detail, but basically any car registered from 1 april 2025 will pay a tenner in first year ved (road tax), then £195 for every year after that. Hybrid cars get a small discount (£10) but if your vehicle had a list price which exceeded £40,000 when it was first sold then you may also be liable for the 'luxury car tax' fee, which adds £425 to the vehicle's annual ved costs. Older evs (registered between 2017 and 2024) will start to pay £195 per year from april, while evs registered before 2017 will pay £20 per year.
